What to Buy Before Bringing Your Dog Home from a Shelter
Before bringing a dog home from a shelter, you should prepare the right environment to help them settle into their new surroundings. Here’s a list of essential items worth buying before picking up your dog from the shelter:
1. Food and water bowls: Choose bowls suited to your dog’s size. Larger dogs may need bigger bowls, while smaller dogs will do fine with smaller ones.
2. Food: Check with the shelter what food the dog has been eating and stick to the same diet at first to avoid stomach upsets. You can gradually introduce changes later if needed.
3. Lead and collar (or harness): You’ll need a lead to safely walk your dog. The collar or harness should be suited to your dog’s size and strength.
4. Bed: Every dog needs their own space to rest. This could be a dedicated dog bed or a mat. Make sure it’s the right size for your dog.
5. Toys: A dog needs something to play with, especially if they’re young and energetic. Toys help them burn off energy and provide entertainment.
6. Treats: These can be useful during training and as a reward for good behaviour.
7. Grooming and hygiene products: A grooming kit (brush, dog toothpaste and toothbrush, shampoo), as well as puppy training pads (if it’s a young dog or house-training is needed) and poop bags.
8. Crate or transport carrier: A crate can help with house training and give your dog a safe place to relax. A transport carrier may be needed for trips to the vet.
Remember not to overwhelm your dog with too many new things at first – it can be a lot to take in. The most important thing is meeting their basic needs and keeping them safe. Over time, you’ll learn what your new four-legged friend loves most and can tailor their supplies to their preferences.
